Intel-specific platforms for Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs)

After the huge success of the Centrino platform that contributed in a fundamental way in increasing participation of portable solutions, Intel did not disregard the development of this new field of mobile computing.

And, after the first 2 years it has made available some versions of their low-power processors for the field of portable devices.

These include ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) at reduced voltage of Pentium CPU. M Dothan and Yonah Core Solo, decided to develop some products specifically for the UMPC.

Initially the interest was limited to just Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC), but in mid-2007, Intel has proven to be interested in the development of their own Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) (generally cheaper), although using the same technologies used for the UMPCs.

The first platform, developed by the American company as also the basis of MID devices is actually the second generation of platforms developed for UMPC, known as McCaslin and processor-based Stealey, introduced to the market in 2007.

In fact, Intel believes that the real spread of these new devices will start using the new Menlow platform (later renamed Centrino Atom) and based on Silverthorne processor, released in the second quarter of 2008.

Subsequently, in 2009, was the time of Moorestown platform which, in turn, provides a true revolution in this sector.

Thanks to the processor Lincroft that was the first CPU of this sector designed according to an approach of System on a Chip (SoC), or integrating within it the chipset (consisting of northbridge and southbridge components).

In this way a single chip contains the traditional processor, the memory controller RAM, the circuitry of input / output and the graphics subsystem. This innovation is expected to significantly increase the autonomy of exercise solutions UMPC.
