Webcast is a term used to refer to the production, transmission and delivery of a presentation containing video, audio and text via a web browser. Reception of broadcast transmission takes place in real time (live).

In contrast to the conventional method of transmission, which is only one-way, webcasting allows the audience, invited participants to interact with the creator and shape what is delivered.

The simplest form of internet broadcasting network uses data stream media (audio, video and text), the content of which determined by the transmission moderator.

The advantage of the webcast technology is the ability to reach out with the message (presentation) to a large audience, in many cases, in many remote geographic locations, at relatively low cost.

The use of interactivity also allows you to provide feedback from the public (eg in the form of questions, voting, etc).

From a technical point of view, data streaming is a relatively new technology on the Internet. In the early stages of the Internet all audio and video files were loaded on the drive before they could be played by the computer.

That’s why you have to wait until the entire file is loaded correctly on the hard disk. It can be concluded that the first load and then play technology may be appropriate for programs with short clips, but not for listening to live radio or watching video clips. Webcast removes these limitations.

Streaming technology allows for instant playback. Interestingly, each transmission can be watched repeatedly, because it acts as a server / DVD recorder.

To perform webcast transmission over the Internet, the original images should be converted into a audiovisual stream designed for the Internet. It is not a simple process and requires a lot of important steps:

 

  • Capture – the process for selecting a program designed for transmission over the network. The program can be uniquely prepared for the Internet or can be adapted from existing radio and television programs.
  • Edit – step allows you to edit the selected material so that the consumer receives the presentation which contains content in accordance with the intentions of the sender. This step uses the tools to publish on the web as well as authentication messages.
  • Encoding – the use of an appropriate compression scheme and streaming technology so as to allow for the conversion of events to formats that can be streamed over the Internet.
  • Delivery – encoded file must be placed in a special streaming server so that it can be sent to or taken up by it.
  • The push is transmitting real-time video and audio at the same time as with conventional broadcasting via terrestrial, cable, or satellite links.

The pull method is the transmission of network stations clips. The previously prepared clips are downloaded according to the user’s request from a special streaming server. These programs are usually encrypted and stored on a dedicated server.
